Bastarbut is an organization dedicated to the promotion and distribution of independent culture in Israel.
Bastarbut consists of an online store and of a traveling stand, offering independent books and periodicals. Its aim is to broaden the public's exposure to literature, art, comics, theory and criticism published by unique, small presses. Bastarbut is committed to enhance familiarity with independent culture, culture that is currently alive within a limited crowd of artists and consumers but lacks appropriate exposure among the public at large and across the country. Bastarbut's goal is to offer the public everywhere in Israel, in music festivals, in cultural events and at political demonstrations only the output of small publishing houses: books that can seldom be found in the chain stores, books containing independent, original, progressive and fascinating materials. Books and periodicals that are produced thanks to passion, involvement and love, and not out of desire to top the best-sellers list. All titles on the stand are sold in prices that are fair both to costumers and to the producers.
So far Bastarbut has participated in such events as the Indynegev festival, Chutzmize Festivals, Beer Sheva's Smilnaski festival, Tel-Aviv University's book fair, Desert Poetry days at Sde Boker, Pacha Koocha nights, activities coordinated by the "Culture Guerilla" art openings etc. Bastarbut organizes poetry readings and performances wherever the stand is placed and brings both the written word and the location to life. Bastarbut organized readings and performances at the "Plastic market" in both Herzliyah and Tel-Aviv, and at Jerusalem's Yankis Bar. This January Bastarbut organized a major event at Tel-Aviv's Comfort Club, "Kri'at Shira - Zion's first Spoken Word event".
Bastarbut further supports literary initiative and is supporting a new literary review: Elat Hamastik.
