Merav Heiman is a young artist, an honorary graduate of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, specializing in photography and video. Many of her works deal with the female identity, and with social conventions linked with relationships, family, consumerism, and the home. Her photographs are meticulously staged, and she tends to create series dealing with varying subjects.
In 2001, Heiman created the exhibition Sister of Mercy - a series of color prints documenting intimate encounters in the homes of men and women she met on online chats. In the framework of these encounters, gaps emerge between anonymous and intimate, between the aspiration for closeness and the feeling of strangeness the photographs evoke, thus revealing the fantasy of a couples intimacy in its naked form.
In the solo show Split, Heiman dealt with the relation of the female body and the land, and the tension and pain created due to this charged contact. The series of photographs documents the artist performing gymnastic splits on the earth in different sites in the country has a political context in its reference to a delicate theme in the Israeli existence, that of the relation to the earth and its occupation; the point where the female body meets the earth creates a contact that is both painful and ironic.
These days Heiman is completing a new series of works dealing with the human longing to nature and authenticity. She stages different scenes in commercial tourist attractions, where the artificial surroundings ironically replace reality itself.
